It’s important to point out that I’ve dedicated my life to the study of boxing, karate, a variety of martial arts, but specializing in Aikido and the Russian martial art of Systema…

But not solely as a form of combat, but also as a way to control my body and my mind when the situation called for it.

Turns out, I made the right choice…

In 1997 I was accepted into the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst in the UK and was commissioned into The Parachute Regiment in 1998.

During this time I taught classes to the Parachute Regiment in arrest and restraint techniques, before serving in Northern Ireland.

I served in the Parachute Regiment for five years, leaving as a Captain in 2003.

Today I own and operate The Systema Academy in Melksham, England, west of London.

So why do we hear so much about the dangers of stress and anxiety these days?

Stress and anxiety have been called the “scourge of the modern era”…even though they’ve existed since the dawn of time.

This has never been truer than in the times we live in today…

You may not know this, but humans were originally designed to handle stress quite easily…

But let’s face it, life was different for prehistoric man…

Run away

Don’t become dinner

Rest and recover

Chase down prey

Capture it so the family eats and survives

Short bursts of stress that faded back to baseline as quickly as the threat appeared.

Humans needed to handle these intense bouts of stress just to survive.

So how is our stress today different?

How could the “modern stress” possibly be more dangerous than being hunted as prey?

Because today–with all our amazing advances–we’ve discovered ways to be stressed 24 hours a day, 7 days per week. 

As result, the levels of anxiety across all age groups have steadily risen over the passing decades[1]…

The problem is, constant and chronic stress is something we’re NOT equipped to handle well at all.

An article in Medical News Today describes it this way[2]…

In ancient times, constant or chronic stress and anxiety were unheard of…

“At the age of 70 I have undergone a fourth hip revision operation…The operation involved a cup replacement and bone graft and was more complex than expected.

From the recovery room to discharge, I was able to control any pain by simply focusing on ‘drawing’ the pain with inhales and smoothly releasing the pain with the exhales.
